Keep Your HVAC Off the Naughty List

Whether you’re “dreaming of a White Christmas,” or “Walking in a Winter Wonderland,” holiday carols make one thing clear– this season is cold! And with Arkansas temperatures continuing to drop, you may be more eager to meet your HVAC under the mistletoe than a potential loved one. So what do you do when you shiver over to your thermostat only to see that it’s set to heat, but nothing’s happening? It might be because of one of these five reasons…

Thermostat

Small but mighty, your thermostat is a sensitive piece of machinery that can easily be affected by a variety of problems. Check your circuit breaker to make sure that the breaker is, well, breaking; then turn it off and on again in case it was tripped. If that doesn’t work, take a note from Saint Nick himself and make a list of possible heat sources and check it twice. If your thermostat is basking in too much sunlight (or lamplight), there’s a chance that it’s reading your home’s temperature incorrectly.

Dirty Air Filter

Dirt and neglect are the top causes of heating and cooling failure, so don’t shrug away this small task! When your filters are dirty, not only does your home become polluted with germs and allergens, but your HVAC has to work overtime to push out warm air. This extra effort causes unnecessary wear and tear on your unit which often results in malfunction (and sky-high energy bills– but that’s a different topic).

Clogged Ducts

You cleaned your chimney so Santa can shimmy down, but what about your ductwork? Similar to the way your air filters function, if your ducts are blocked, your heater will have to work harder than ever to show less-than-average results. To make matters worse, these blockages are a big fire hazard. Make sure chestnuts are the only thing roasting on an open fire this season by calling in a professional to clean out your ductwork.

Leaky Ductwork

If your heater seems to be blowing warm air, but your rooms can’t seem to feel the results, there’s a chance you have one or more duct leaks. Check your home for uncharacteristically hot or cold areas, and make a point to show them to your HVAC professional so they can be properly addressed.
